Looking through your blog many people are trying to explain it to you but you don’t seem to get it.

Anyway, we’re gonna say it this one last time -

The way the English language is seen in the world, is very different to how people view Japanese. English is seen as a “global” language or something. It’s used for business, travel, politics etc. English words has permeated many languages e.g. Bengali, Japanese, Spanish etc.

Whereas Japanese is not seen as a “global’ language - it’s not a language expected in business, travel, politics etc. to the extent English is therefore the standards are different. I mean, if a Japanese person says “byebye” it could very well be because the English language has impacted their vocabulary to this extent.

However if a non-Japanese says kawaii instead of cute, it can be seen as accessorising. They are only doing it to look “cool”. It is a false equivalence to liken it to Japanese people saying “byebye” instead of sayounara because of the extent to which English has impacted vocabulary as compared to Japan.

double standards. it doesnt matter if English is international language or not. its irrelevant. kawaii is in my vocabulary just like byebye in japanese.

You don’t understand. In Japan, the English language has influenced macro society a lot in Japan. As I said, it is a false equivalence to claim that you saying “kawaii” is just the same as a Japanese person saying “byebye”. There is a difference between cultural exchange and cultural appropriation.

And that difference can heavily be due to English being an international language. As it is an English language, it can impact vocab on other languages. However, you saying kawaii is accessorization and only to do it because it’s ~edgy~.

-Mod N

but japanese does the same. youre a hypocrite. why cant japanese influenced my language? if you go to japan there so many shirts with english on it. but it is wrong to have japanese in my vocabulary? japanese people say english words to sound cool too

I have linked an academic paper literally showing how a Japanese person using English words is not the same as an English person using Japanese words.

They may - but think about it. What are the ramifications? A Japanese person using English words have no ramifications to English speakers. English speakers won’t be affected at all. However Japanese people - especially Japanese diaspora - get affected a lot by people integrating Japanese words to look edgy and cool. The Japanese language is the butt of the joke a lot of the time and Japanese diaspora have to face that shit. But as an English speaker, a Japanese person using English words to sound cool is has no ramifications?

-Mod N

how is saying japanese words hurt them? did you ask them? i ask some japanese people if they would be hurt they said no. of course some of them will but some english will be hurt if they said random english words. are you even japanese? japanese people can be upset be they selves. you dont have to be upset because you think japanese people are.

Whether they’re hurt or not - it still contributes to anti Japanese sentiment where the language is treated like a joke.

Let’s talk about the Hindi language for example! If a Hindi speaker says “hello” instead of “namaste” it’s because well a) India being a growing English speaking country and English vocabulary is filtering through Hindi (and many Hindi speakers have English as their second language). But an English speaking, non-South Asian person saying “namaste”? It’s almost always that they are accessorising Hindi to promote their shitty hippy lifestyle, which consistently paints Hinduism and India in an incorrect manner thus contributing to stereotypes and our oppression especially in the West.

Seriously stop trying to justify yourself. You continuously make false equivalences and pretend the world exists in a vacuum of racial harmony.

like a joke? everyone that say kawaii doesn’t mean its a joke. are you japanese? there is nothing wrong with saying kawaii in a japanese sentences. japanese uses german, french etc words too even if those words are in japanese language. if someone not japanese they of no reason to be upset, i ask some japanese people and they are not upset

Japanese followers? Thoughts?

Oh do I NOT tolerate the ‘But ACTUAL Japan-born Japanese are not bothered by my language appropriation!’ bulls*it because this is REALLY dismissive of Japanese-Americans and many other diasporas who cling on to what little of the language they knew growing up in various countries around the world (but ESPECIALLY in English-only countries) because of the s*it we go through and actually DO get bothered by people like YOU…

First and foremost, I AM Japanese, but born in the US and currently living in Japan, and for the longest time I could NOT speak my language back in the US because I had it cut off from me at an early age, and it was the biggest thorn in my side since THAT was a part of my culture and identity I felt lost without, and it f*cking HURT.
Just NOW can I speak it somewhat fluently, thanks to constantly communicating with people here (relatives, friends, co-workers, etc), unlike expats and weeaboos here who refuse to do what I and many other Japanese diaspora do. And it’s people like YOU who I get REALLY testy at for treating our language as some god damn toy when you have no idea what me and other Japanese that are NOT Japan-born that LOST that part of ourselves go through!

There is a god damn difference between white people appropriating our damn language as something ‘cool’ and using it as an annoying accessory VS us Japanese diaspora having to code-switch/mix our Japanese and English together when either we are with other Japanese-Americans that can speak both languages. THEN there is the fact that white people, literally decided, that we DON’T deserve to speak our languages and ripped it out from us to the point, that we are using what little Japanese we know from our parents and grandparents (if they were born and raised in Japan, but immigrated to an English-speaking country like my mom was) as a way to remain connected to our culture. Top it off with the fact that we get a LOT of double standards of ‘Why don’t you speak our language?!’ when we CAN’T speak it due to a LOT of racist reasons and other factors. And then when we do talk, it’s either ‘LOL STOP SPEAKING CHINESE! GOD!’ OR some other condescending comment meant to be a ‘compliment’ but isn’t. And, you have the NERVE, AGAIN, to go and feel entitled to USE our language as some empty aesthetic, just because you want to seem ‘cool’ and ‘cultured’ about our stuff? F*ck OFF!

FYI too, the reason we USE a lot of English here in Japan is due to IMPERIALISM from the US, and you can thank god damn MacArthur for implementing English into Japan when WWII ended because of THAT.

TL;DR Japanese is NOT for you to use, and there is a DIFFERENCE between Japan-born Japanese NOT encountering this type of s*it you are doing and being ‘okay’ with it, VS actual Japanese diaspora that LIVE with this s*it every, single day and seeing people like YOU use the language improperly, and THAT is WHO YOU ARE HURTING. (Good lord, I could rant about this s*it a lot more…)

ok I’m japanese and don’t say or speak japanese words if you’re not japanese. Japanese people saying bye bye is not some weaboo ass ol’ jack off to sailor moon teenage boy saying kawaii trying to be cute or cool. You’re not cute!!! or cool!! all these white people think that japanese people love them, like no first of all you’re creepy you’re not japanese and you never will be, but anyways you can’t say kawaii because you’re not japanese, English is literally spoken and taught all over the world - japanese isn’t and is the distinct language of the japanese people and if you’re not a japanese person then !!!
